Diwali photos in Columbus, Ohio
A family photo session… Diwali style!
When I was helping this family plan their October photo session, it was really important to them to weave in their Diwali traditions in a way that would feel modern, relaxed and fun for the whole family! Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights and the biggest holiday of the year in India. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance… and makes the perfect opportunity for a lifestyle photo session bursting with color.
This family readied all of their Diwali traditions before our photoshoot, like decorating their home with candles/lanterns to welcome light and good energy into the home, hanging colorful garlands, and placing flower petals. They also bake homemade sweets and spend time re-connecting with their loved ones - in a way, it’s actually pretty similar to how many folks celebrate Christmas!
Along with documenting the traditional blessing with the whole family, we also did some portraits of the three generations of women together in the nursery. We finished with delicious sweets and a few relaxed portraits of the whole rowdy crowd in the front yard, which is something I always try to do during a family session (if the weather cooperates!)
The afternoon I spent with this family will always hold a special place in my heart. We photographers come into our client’s lives for intimate moments and events. We go inside their homes and photograph their newborn babies, their children, their love stories and their most cherished memories which happen behind closed doors. If you’re considering hiring a photographer, let me be the first to admit it can seem daunting… it takes trust, time, and yes, money too! But, having an artist capture your family’s memories is something you’ll never regret. My clients are so grateful to have photographs from this session that honor their traditions and their precious everyday moments, wrapped up into one heartfelt & unique story.
